A Little Flirting Goes a Long Way: What We are Learning Behind the Scenes
We have started filming UT Match: From First Date to Forever, and let's just say...we are already making some interesting observations!

At UT Match, we spend a lot of time talking with singles about dating, relationships, and what it takes to build a meaningful connection, but there is something especially interesting about watching those connections unfold in real life. And one thing has already caught our attention! Sometimes the hardest part of dating is simply getting the conversation started.
As filming began, we noticed that some of our daters were a little nervous. Some were quieter than others, and a few seemed unsure of what to say or how to break the ice. And honestly, that’s completely understandable!
Meeting someone new can feel a little awkward, especially when you are hoping to make a good impression. Add a camera to the mix, Nicole and JoLynn, and those first-date nerves can become even more noticeable, but watching these interactions reminded us of something we often discuss with singles at UT Match.
Dating isn’t just about showing up. It is about showing interest. Really think about that statement. It doesn’t mean you need to have the perfect opening line, be the funniest person in the room or suddenly become an extrovert. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking a question, sharing a little about yourself, smiling, or even doing a little flirting! Yes, we said flirting!!
Somewhere along the way, flirting seems to have become a lost art for some singles, but flirting doesn’t have to be awkward, overly forward or complicated. It can be playful teasing, a genuine compliment, a little humor, or simply letting someone know you are enjoying their company. And here is something important we have noticed: Being interested is often more attractive than trying to be interesting.
Not Sure What to Ask? Start Here!
One of the easiest ways to make a date more enjoyable is to ask questions that go beyond the usual “What do you do for work?” or “Where did you grow up?”
In fact, we recently shared our Top 7 Questions to Ask on a Date and here are three conversation starters we especially like:
1. What is something most people don’t know about you?
This is a fun way to discover someone’s personality, hidden talents, or something unexpected. You might uncover a shared interest or a story that makes you laugh!
2. What does a fun weekend look like to you?
This question can tell you a lot about someone’s lifestyle and how they enjoy spending their free time. Are they adventurous, spontaneous, laid-back or a little bit of everything? Plus, it gets them imagining what spending time together might actually look like!
3. How do you handle conflict or tough conversations?
Maybe not your first question over dinner, but as you get to know someone, it is a great way to understand how they communicate and approach challenges. And here’s our biggest tip: Don’t make your date feel like a job interview!
Ask a question, listen to the answer, share something about yourself and let the conversation go where it naturally leads. Throw in a little humor, make eye contact, and don’t be afraid to show someone you’re enjoying their company.
And remember, conversation is a two-way street! If someone asks you a question, don’t just give a one-word answer. Give them something to work with and show curiosity in return. After all, a great date isn’t about asking the most questions. It’s about creating a connection.
So, What Have We Noticed From Filming So Far?
We are still early in our journey with UT Match: From First Date to Forever, but watching real singles interact has been a great reminder that dating takes courage, curiosity and effort from both people.
And here’s another thing worth remembering: Just because someone is quiet at first doesn’t mean there is not potential. Sometimes people need a little time to feel comfortable. A smile, a thoughtful question or a playful comment can completely change the energy of a conversation.
That’s why we encourage singles not to make snap judgments based on the first few minutes of a date. Give people a chance to relax and show you who they really are. Not every conversation will lead to romance. Not every first impression will turn into a second date and sometimes the people who surprise us the most are the ones we least expect. But that’s what makes dating interesting!
A Little Sneak Peek at What’s Coming!
As filming continues, we are excited to see how personalities, conversations and connections unfold. Will there be chemistry? Will there be flirting? Will someone discover a connection they weren’t expecting? You will have to watch to find out!
And here’s a fun thought: While watching our upcoming series on Instagram and YouTube, you might just spot someone you would be interested in getting to know yourself! After all, you never know where your next connection might come from.
One thing we can tell you already: Dating is a lot more interesting when you’re willing to put yourself out there. So whether you’re preparing for a first date, getting back into dating or hoping to meet someone special, remember that a little curiosity, a genuine smile, and yes, even a little flirting can go a long way. Because sometimes a meaningful connection starts with something as simple as a great conversation.
